An open letter to President-elect Obama

Dear President Obama,

You and we did it! It was a stunning victory after a hard fought and sometimes cruel campaign. I congratulate you and Vice-President Biden, along with your families and campaign staff. I cannot imagine how difficult this was for you, at times, and I hope the next few days of celebration bring some peace back into your lives.

You have my pledge that I will do what I can to emulate your example from now on. I will try to be a better man for the better country I am now part of. I will try to lead in my own home with intelligence, grace, and calmness. I will do what I can to make this country a still more perfect union.

I also pledge that I will be watching your government very closely. I championed your bid for office, campaigned for you among those I encountered, and proudly cast my vote for you. What I want in return is not some pie-in-the-sky campaign promise of instant peace and prosperity. I want that real change to begin. I desire to see our nation rally together to overcome the challenges you so eloquently have outlined time and time again.

I promise to be the first to hold your feet to the fire should I see you straying from those core principles I believe you possess. I will not sit blindly by and offer support if I see only more of the same. You have given me hope, but you cannot take it away from me. I will keep this hope and will channel it elsewhere, to another candidate in four short years, if I come to believe you have lost your own hope.

I truly look forward to eight years of seeing you in the White House. I look forward to watching your gorgeous daughters romp and play and grow up as American princesses. I look forward to those achingly tender moments you share with your wife, whether you think the cameras are pointed at you or not. I look forward to laughing and crying with you as you confront the problems facing us all. I have hope for all these things and I truly desire that you keep your own hope alive as well.

You have made history, but history isn't over yet. There is still much to do and I will do my part to help continue writing that book, one page at a time. Thank you.
