iPad versus neon lights

At dinner yesterday evening in a fashionable sushi restaurant in Chinatown, near the heart of DC, I noticed peculiar behavior by my iPad.  At first, I was alarmed that something had been damaged and it was going to have to be serviced.  However, with some basic detective work, I soon learned it was the result of likely heavy EM interference by the neon lights lining the bar.  See for yourself:

The note I was typing is shown below.  Holding the unit in the air, away from contact with the bar's surface, it behaved fine and normal.  Laying it down on the produced the weird results seen in the video and on the typed note.
