Brit Hume took the opportunity over the weekend to offer his assessment of what Tiger Woods should do next, given his recent and public scandalous behavior. Watch the clip:
Here’s the quote of Hume’s remarks:
The extent to which he can recover seems to me depends on his faith. He is said to be a Buddhist. I don't think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. So My message to Tiger would be, "Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world."
Aside from the asshattery of using his TV show as a pulpit for a particular religion, what’s striking is his apparent ignorance or galling apathy toward the very public and notable examples of scandal by his fellow Christians in recent months and years. Let’s review:
1986 -- Jim Bakker: Was discovered to have been cooking the books of his evangelism church and used some of the money to pay off Jessica Hahn to keep quiet about him raping her in a hotel room.
1988 and 1991 - Jimmy Swaggart: While instrumental in discovering Bakker’s scandals, Swaggart was caught with prostitutes twice and forced to step down from his own TV church.
1987 - Peter Popoff: Busted by James Randi for fraudulent “faith healing” services.
1991 - Robert Tilton: Busted by ABC News for throwing away letters, prayer requests, and pleas for help while pocketing the donation money they sent.
2006 - Mark Foley: US Congressman accused of sending sexually explicit instant messages to an underage male congressional pages. Dual investigations by the FBI and the House Ethics Comm. are still underway and criminal charges may still be filed.
2006 - Kent Hovind: Creationist pastor was busted for tax evasion and cooking his own books to hide money.
2006 - Ted Haggard: Featured in the documentary “Jesus Camp” and head of one of the largest churches in the US, Haggard was busted for having homosexual relationships with members of his church and also a male prostitute, with whom he also used meth.
2007 - David Vitter: US Senator whose name was discovered in the numbers book of DC Madam Deborah Jeane Palfrey admitted his adultery and resigned from his race for Louisiana Governor.
2007 - Larry Craig: US Senator who pled guilty to disorderly conduct in a Minneapolis airport men's room in June, after having been arrested on a charge of homosexual lewd conduct. Governor Craig had previously stated that "people already know that Bill Clinton is a bad boy - a naughty boy."
2008 - Todd Bentley: A featured speaker at Sarah Palin’s churches, along with running a youth ministry in the former home of Jim Bakker, where Palin’s kids also attended, Bentley was asked to step down after he was discovered having an affair with a staffer.
2008 - Tony Alamo: On September 20, 2008, FBI agents raided Tony Alamo Christian Ministries headquarters as part of a child pornography investigation. This investigation involved allegations of physical abuse, sexual abuse and allegations of polygamy and underage marriage. In late July 2009, Alamo (who had a previous conviction for tax evasion in the 1990s) was convicted on ten counts of transporting minors across state lines for sexual purposes, sexual assault and other crimes. On November 13, 2009, he was sentenced to the maximum punishment of 175 years in prison.
2009 - Mike Duvall: This California Assemblyman resigned September 9 after the married champion of family values was videotaped bragging about affairs with two different female lobbyists saying of one of them, "I'm getting into spanking her."
2009 - Mark Sanford: While he had had voted for the impeachment of Bill Clinton, admitted during a press conference on June 24, 2009, that he had traveled to Argentina to have an extra-marital affair with an Argentinian woman. His staff had claimed he was "walking the Appalachian Trail." He then resigned as head of the Southern Governors Association.
2009 - John Ensign: Resigned his position as Chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee on June 16, 2009 after admitting he had an affair with Cynthia Hampton the wife of a close friend, both of whom were working on his campaign. In 1998 Senator Ensign had called for President Clinton (D) to resign after admitting to sexual acts with Monica Lewinsky.
I think Tiger Woods is in better company, quite frankly, than the dishonest and scandal plagued religion Hume advocates.
