3 Days 3 Nights Easter Eggs, Part 2

Why is the 3 days, 3 nights thing important?  It comes from a casually tossed off comparison that Jesus made between himself and the mythical Jonah:
For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

This prediction, while seemingly innocuous and arbitrary, provides a kind of test of the validity of the rest of the story.  The authors wrote these tales down decades, even centuries after they allegedly occurred.  To think they are error free and infallible is beyond ludicrous, yet that is precisely what most modern Christians believe to this day (thanks largely to a vote by the Nicean Council).

Thus, if the story of Jesus can't be trusted to get such a simple detail right, why is it to be trusted by people who should know better and spend their days peering to the sky for the return of their savior god?
