iPad 2 and OS X 10.7 Lion (beta)

The big news in technology from the previous week was the announcement of the iPad 2 from Apple. Having a lot of the expected features already leaked or discussed in rumors, the iPad's second generation now makes it competitive with the first generation of competitors.

The feature load of tablets has, I believe, now plateaued. Future developments will be a race to include more and faster cores or processors, improved screen resolutions, and possibly additional ports. Short of some amazing and yet unforeseen "must have" feature, the overall functionality of tablets will remain the same for a few years.

Apple is banking on that. Prior to the iPad announcement, Apple quietly made available the beta for the upcoming release of OS X 10.7. Announced last year, Steve Jobs indicated Lion would be drawing from lessons learned from the mobile version of their operating system, iOS.

This is very apparent in even this first public look at what's coming. Apple appears to be attempting to reinvent or maybe refine the way we interact with computers. All the basics you would normally expect in an operating system are still there….if you want them. But given the overall changes to the nature of how programs access and save files, not to mention the role the OS itself plays in governing what apps are doing with files clearly shows a glimpse of what Apple has in mind.

I will be getting an iPad 2 on its release day of March 11, 2011. Look for a hands on review by the weekend.
